After winning 8 gold medals, it is no surprise that Michael Phelps tops the list of most searched for Olympic athletes in the week to 16th August 2008. The following chart shows the five most searched for Olympic athletes last week - with searches for "Michael Phelps" more than three times higher than for "Shawn Johnson", the gold medal winning US gymnast.

Interest in Phelps' personal life is high, in particular his father's whereabouts (and his role in raising Michael), his girlfriend and his diet. The following table shows the top 10 US search terms last week that included the word "phelps".

While the list of search terms leaves me envious of Phelps' earning potential, I am personally very interested in Michael Phelps' swimsuit - the super fast Speedo that is helping him break records left right and center. Searches for "speedo" are at their highest level in the past year, up 3-fold last week.
Eight gold medals is hard to beat but we'll keep watching to see if any other athletes beat out Phelps as the most searched for Olympic athlete in 2008.
