Etsy.com Retail Classifieds Website to Watch

I keep hearing about Etsy. First my mother mailed me a newspaper clipping about it and now Bobbie Johnson, technology correspondent with the Guardian, has named it one of the hit websites for 2008. Etsy is a "place to buy all things handmade". I took a look at Hitwise and it seems my mother and Bobbie may be on to something. Etsy is the second most popular Classifieds website after Craigslist. It ranked #36 last week, after Craigslist.org and several city-specific Craigslist websites.

After Craigslist websites and Etsy.com, the highest ranked Classifieds websites are DreamHorse.com and TractorHouse.com. Etsy's ranking among Classifieds websites was up from 66th a year ago to 36th last week. Among all websites, Etsy just makes it into the top 1000, coming in a 953rd last week. The website's share of US Internet visits is up 4 fold year on year and up 34% in the past three months. As you can see in the following chart, the growth has been fairly steady over the past twelve months.

Etsy.com receives nearly a quarter (23%) of its traffic from search engines -- all of it organic -- and 16% from email services. Etsy attracts 38% more female visitors than average for the online population and over-indexes among 25-34 and 35-44 year olds. Compared with Craigslist.org and eBay, Etsy.com appeals more to lower income groups, women and to Internet users in the central states.

Given the website's steady and continued growth, I'd agree with Bobbie - and my mother - that it is one to watch.

I must agree with your mom that Etsy is a fantastic site set to grow in traffic and in people's hearts in the next year.

A great seller on there provided me with a custom-made laptop bag, for which I've received tons of compliments. It's a fantastic outlet for those who love to create little goodies but can't necessarily find a local buyer. Etsy, putting a cool twist on arts and crafts!

Also, best wishes for the new year to you, your family and your team, Heather!

Vero- thanks for sharing that personal experience and for your warm holiday wishes. Sounds like quite a cool laptop bag!

I will also be in snowy Ottawa in a few days. In the meantime, happy new year!

Thanx for the find.

Just wished you had this post BEFORE Christmas.

We wanted to buy gifts that stood out by having distinction, and wanted to avoid electronics this year.

I just discovered etsy myself and shared it with all my friends. It is a wonderful website for those of us who only want to sell a couple things at a time. Also, for buying things that the maker really cares about :-)
