2 of the top 3 fastest moving search terms in the social networking category for the w/e 11/04/09 were related to the 17-year old Italian Manchester United footballer, Federico Macheda: (#1 'federico macheda' and #3 'macheda'). After his recent winning goals in his games against Aston Villa on 05/04/09 and Sunderland on 11/04/09, the footballer has caused quite the stir in the media and people are looking to learn more about Man Utd's new star player. Wikipedia, Manchester United, and YouTube were the top 3 sites receiving traffic from searches for the young footballer last week, together just under 50% of traffic.

According to Hitwise UK, searches for ‘amir khan’ have increased over the last week, ending 13/09/08, by 235%. This makes searches for Amir Khan the highest ever since September 2005. This increase was due to the recent fight on the 6th September against Colombian boxer Breidis Prescott, who actually defeated the previously undefeated British boxer. 12% of searches for Amir Khan have been sending traffic to YouTube, which shows that a lot of people searching for him have been interested in watching the 54 second knock out fight.

Recent data from Hitwise UK reveals the top five most searched for Olympians, last week, in the UK. Topping the list is US swimmer 'michael phelps', who is generating alot of interest as he attempts to win 8 gold medals in Beijing. The remaining four in the list are UK Olympians, with interest mostly focussed on the young first timers, swimmer 'hannah miley', hockey player 'charlotte craddock', 14 year old diver 'tom daley' and diver 'tonia couch'.

Recent data from Hitwise UK shows that searches for 'rafael nadal' & 'roger federer' increased by 187% and 650% respectively over the two weeks of Wimbledon (21/06 to 05/07), however, interest online wasn't entirely focused on the performance of the two sportsmen. There was a lot of interest in Federer's outfit, with 'roger federers cardigan' and 'where can i buy roger federers cardigan' appearing in the top 20 searches for the Swiss tennis player. Interest in Nadal was mainly concerned with pictures, posters and girlfriends.

Wimbledon & Anglian Water top fast moving UK searches

According to Hitwise UK, the fastest moving search term last week was 'wimbledon 2008', and searches for the popular tennis star 'ana ivanovic' put the term at number four. The second fastest moving search term was 'anglian water', after news the water supply in Northamptonshire, run by Anglian Water, was contaminated with cryptosporidium. Searches for 'amy winehouse' and 'all saints' round out the top five.

Ana Ivanovic most popular tennis player in the UK

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that Ana Ivanovic is the most searched for tennis player in the UK, ahead of Andy Murray, who is in second place and Maria Sharapova who is in third. Ana Ivanovic's official website was the most visited of the big stars at Wimbledon, overtaking visits to Andy Murray's website yesterday. People aren't interested in her tennis ability, however, as the top searches are concerned with pictures and photos of the No1 seed player.

McDonald's Fantasy Football most popular for Euro 2008

According to Hitwise UK, McDonalds Fantasy Football was the most visited Euro 2008 fantasy football site last week. The website was #2 in the Sports - Fantasy category, ahead of other popular Euro 2008 fantasy football offerings, including these from free newspaper Metro, The Telegraph and Yahoo!. One in five downstream visits from the Euro 2008 UEFA site was to McDonalds Fantasy Football.

The site reached its highest ever weekly position of #7 in the Sports-Football category as expectation grows for tonight’s UEFA Cup final in Manchester. Since Rangers won their semi-final, searches for ‘flights to manchester’ have reached their highest point this year. On May 1st, bmibaby.com, one of the carriers servicing the Glasgow – Manchester route, experienced its highest single day share of visits since the Christmas period.

Visits to MUFC overtake LFC

Searches for 'flights to moscow' were also at their highest ever peak during the week ending 19 April, as it became likely the final would feature two UK teams.

US Masters website reaches highest rank within Sports category

According to Hitwise UK, UK Internet visits to the Official Masters Tournament website tripled last week compared to 2007, as the website reached its highest ever position of #17 in the Sports category. Visits to the website of Justin Rose also peaked last week, as the english golfer reached the top of the leaderboard on Thursday. The most searched for brands of golf clubs were 'ping golf clubs' and 'taylor made golf clubs', with the latter seeing the largest increase in searches last week.

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that searches for 'boat race' for the week ending 29 March were up by 12% on last year, as the annual Oxford & Cambridge boat race took place on Saturday. The top website, capturing 75% of searches for 'boat race' was the official website www.theboatrace.org, with visits to the site up 16% on last year. Visits to Eurostar at highest since Rugby World Cup started

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that daily UK Internet visits to www.eurostar.com were at their highest yesterday since the Rugby World Cup 2007 began, as England beat France to go through to the finals of the cup.
