Swine Flu fears driving web traffic

Following the breaking news around swine flu earlier this week, UK Internet traffic to the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention increased more than 200% each in just 4 days. For the week ending 25/04/09, 'swine flu' was already the number one search term driving traffic to cdc.gov, showing the urgency of the public to find out more about the disease.

Amy Winehouse raises awareness of emphysema online

According to Hitwise UK, news that the singer Amy Winehouse may be in the early stages of emphysema has prompted a lot of interest online in the illness. Searches for 'emphysema' increased by 111% during the week ending 28 June, compared to the previous largest peak on searches for the term in February. 30% of searches visited Wikipedia, followed by BBC News, NHS and a number of online medical websites such as Netdoctor.co.uk.

Patrick Swayze illness raises awareness of pancreatic cancer

As news broke that Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, UK Internet searches for the illness increased 10-fold from the week before to reach the highest ever peak during the week ending 8 March. Awareness of the cancer has also increased with searches for 'pancreatic cancer symptoms' rising. Half of all searches for 'pancreatic cancer' are going to Cancer Help, a cancer information service, and 9% of searches to Wikipedia.

Gym websites visits increase; Natalie Cassidy fitness DVD queen

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows visits to a custom category of the top 8 Fitness clubs online have increased by 2.5% year-on-year to the week ending 5th January - traditionally the peak time for visits to gym websites each year. Celebrity fitness DVD's remain popular this year; searches for former Eastenders star "Natalie Cassidy" were six-times higher than nearest fitness DVD rivals, Davina McCall, Tricia Penrose and Coleen Nolan last week.

Cambridge Diet top diet for Britons

According to Hitwise UK, the top five most searched for diets in the UK are currently the Cambridge Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the GI Diet and the South Beach Diet. Weight Watchers, Tesco Diets and Weight Loss Resources were the most visited dieting websites last week, and visits to the Boots Change One Thing website increased by 60% week on week.
