Michael Jackson searches increase by 1200%

March 10, 2009

Following Michael Jackson's announcement last week that he is to play 10 dates at the O2 this summer, searches for the King of Pop increased by 1200%. With fans able to register for presale tickets traffic to www.michaeljackson.com increased 3-fold for the week ending 07/03/09, while ‘michael Jackson tickets’ was the top search term sending traffic to Ticket Exchange websites. With his comeback show predicted by many to make show business history, it comes as no surprise that 'michael jackson' was the 3rd fastest moving search term in the UK last week, behind 'v festival' (#1) and 'dr seuss' (#2 after featuring in a Google Doodle) for the same period.

Cinema traffic increases in lead up to the Oscars

February 26, 2009

UK internet traffic to cinemas increased by 30% last week. Out of all cinemas in the custom category, Apollo Cinemas experienced the largest spike in traffic (53.57%) as the pre-Oscars buzz encouraged people to view the nominated films.

UK Internet searches for Best Picture Nominees

In anticipation of Sunday's Oscar results for best picture of 2009, the most searched-for nominee in the UK last week was Slumdog Millionaire. 'slumdog millionaire' was also the first non-branded search term driving traffic to IMDB. During the same period IMDB was the biggest recipient of traffic from all the nominee search terms; except 'benjamin button', which sent 26% of its traffic to www.benjaminbutton.com.

New Year's Eve losing its appeal?

According to Hitwise UK searches for 'new years eve' traditionally peak in the last week of December and this year was no exception. Yet compared with December 2006 there were 60% less searches for 'new years eve' this December and 20% less than in December 2007.

In 2007 viewlondon.co.uk was the fourth website receieving the most traffic from 'new years eve' searches but this year viewlondon became the the top site receiving traffic from the search. Traffic to the site doubled in the last week of December 2008 compared to the same week in 2007.

Dead Set helps E4’s web traffic to double

UK Internet traffic to e4.com increased by 132% between the weeks ending October 4th and November 1st. Much of this increase was as result of online interest in Dead Set, Charlie Brooker’s zombie mini-series set in the Big Brother House. During the 4 weeks ending 01/11/08, ‘dead set’ was the top search term sending traffic to e4.com, ranking above the navigational term ‘e4’. A list of the top 10 search terms sending traffic to the Channel 4 operated website over the period also included ‘deadset’, ‘dead set e4’ and ‘e4 dead set’

Top Fast Moving Search Terms- Georgina Baillie, Russell Brand, Jonathon Ross and Andrew Sachs

According to Hitwise UK visits to Russell Brand’s website, russellbrand.tv, have increased more then 8 fold over last week. Interest in Russell Brand shot up after his last BBC Radio 2 show aired in October. Public interest in the controversy has been so great that ‘georgina baillie’ and ‘russell brand’ were the top two fast moving search terms for the week ending 01/11/08. ‘jonathon ross’ was the 4th fast moving search term and ‘andrew sachs’ the 7th. Interestingly there were 80% more searches for ‘georgina baillie’ then ‘russell brand’.

'Another way to die' scores for Radio 1

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that UK Internet visits to BBC's Radio 1 website reached the highest ever level during the week ending 20 September with visits increasing by 25% from the week before. This was largely driven by interest in the world-wide release of the new Bond theme song 'Another way to die', with visits to the Radio 1 website peaking on Thursday, the day of release. BBC Radio 1 is the number one website within the Entertainment - Radio category, picking up just over one in six internet visits to the category last week.

Oasis number one website in Bands & Artists.

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that visits to the official website for British band Oasis, www.oasisinet.com, increased four-fold, over the two weeks from the 9th August to the 23rd August, as tickets sold out for the band's recently announced tour. The website was number one in the Bands & Artists category last week followed by Metallica's official website, www.metallica.com, as the band released the first song from their upcoming album.

Visits to Katy Perry's website increase eight-fold.

According to Hitwise UK, visits to the website for Katy Perry, singer of 'i kissed a girl', have increased eight-fold over the last four weeks (to 9 August), and the website ranked at #20 within the Bands & Artists category up from #56 the week before. As well as traffic from Google, the main drivers of visits to Perry's website were BBC Radio 1, Youtube and MySpace.

UK retailers not picking up on Mamma Mia soundtrack interest

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that searches for the Mamma Mia soundtrack have increased four-fold over the last four weeks since the films release, and are seven times higher than the Abba best-of album 'abba gold'. UK retailers are not capitilising on this, however, with the US arm of Amazon the top recipient of searches for the Mamma Mia album, followed by a lyrics website (www.stlyrics.com) and US website CD Universe (www.cduniverse.com).

Chester most searched for Zoo

According to Hitwise UK, the most searched-for UK Zoo last week was 'chester zoo', followed by 'london zoo' and 'edinburgh zoo'. Searches for the top 10 zoos all increased last week as the recent hot sunny weather coincided with school finishing for the summer break. 'Colchester zoo' and 'bristol zoo' rounded out the top five zoo searches.

Amy Winehouse raises awareness of emphysema online

According to Hitwise UK, news that the singer Amy Winehouse may be in the early stages of emphysema has prompted a lot of interest online in the illness. Searches for 'emphysema' increased by 111% during the week ending 28 June, compared to the previous largest peak on searches for the term in February. 30% of searches visited Wikipedia, followed by BBC News, NHS and a number of online medical websites such as Netdoctor.co.uk.

46664.com fourth most visited site in Bands & Artists

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that searches for 'nelson mandela', ahead of the 46664 concert celebrating the former South African president's 90th birthday, increased eight-fold during the week ending 28 June. 46% of searches for 'nelson mandela' visited Wikipedia and the official website for the ANC was second. The 46664 concert website was the fourth most visited website in the Hitwise category Music-Bands & Artists last week.

'Cloverfield' most searched for blu ray disc

According to Hitwise UK, the number of searches containing the term 'blu ray' have increased by 165% since June 2007. 'Cloverfield' is currently the most searched for blu ray movie, over the four weeks ending 14 June 2008, and the majority of the remaining Top 10 blu ray movies are action blockbusters such as Transformers, Star Wars and Terminator 2. Panasonic is the most searched for brand of blu ray player in the UK.

Searches for 'coldplay' skyrocket

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that searches for 'coldplay' increased 15-fold during the week ending 31 May from the week before, as the band launched a new album and announced a world tour. The band's official website www.coldplay.com was the second most visited website in the Music-Bands & Artists category last week, and 45% of downstream visits were to a ticketing website.

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows that one in seven visits to online radio websites last week were to BBC Radio One. Searches for the station's annual music festival, 'radio 1 big weekend' were almost triple the number of searches in 2007, as registrations for tickets opened last week. Searches for 'maidstone kent', the venue for this year's festival, also spiked last week.

Searches for 'mario kart wii' double

According to Hitwise UK, searches for 'mario kart wii' increased by 134% last week, following the release of the racing game by Nintendo. GAME is the top retailer to receive traffic from searches for the term, over the four weeks ending 12 April. The remainder of the top five recipients are information websites such as Wikipedia, YouTube and GameTrailers.

US Searches for 'leona lewis' increase by 90%

US Internet searches for 'leona lewis' continue to rise as the British popstar topped the US Charts this week. Searches have increased by 90% over the four weeks ending 22 March. Youtube is the top website receiving visits from searches for the X-Factor winner, followed by Myspace and Wikipedia.

HMV.com visits highest peak since Christmas

According to Hitwise UK, last week Internet visits to HMV.com were at their highest peak within the Shopping & Classifieds:Music category since Christmas. Visits were 30% higher than the Easter week in 2007. The top album searches sending visits to HMV were 'now 68', 'mash up mix 2008' and 'floorfillers 2008'.

YouTube reaches highest ever peak in visits

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows popular video sharing website YouTube reached its highest ever peak for market share of weekly Internet visits during the week ending 23rd February. One in five visits to the website last week came from a social networking or forum website. The term "youtube" is the fourth largest search term in the UK.

Visits to cinema websites up 22%

Off the back of last week's Bafta ceremony Hitwise UK shows visits to the the top five cinema websites increased by 22% to the week ending 16th February. Visits to the Bafta website hit the highest ever peak last week and had doubled from the same week last year. The top five searched-for movies last week were 'cloverfield', 'jumper', 'juno', 'indiana jones' and 'step up 2'.

Recent research from Hitwise UK shows one in every 100 visits to the Television category last week were to the X-Factor website. Visits to X-Factor were 28% higher than to the Strictly Come Dancing website. "Same Difference" were the most searched for X-Factor act online last week, with searches for "Rhydian" and "Leon Jackson" tied for second.
