Following the monthly announcement of the Premium Bond winners, traffic to the National Savings & Investments (NS&I) website tends to peak towards the beginning of each month. From the end of February to the first week in March UK Internet visits to NS&I increased 320%, with 'premium bonds' being the #1 search term driving traffic to the site for the 4 weeks ending 07/03/09. 8 of the top 10 fast moving search terms in the Banks and Financial Institutions category for the week ending 07/03/09 were also related to National Savings & Investments or Premium Bonds.

Since Aleksandr the Meerkat and founder of comparethemeerkat.com televised that his site was not the ‘cheap car insurance’ website comparethemarket.com visits to both sites have increased significantly. According to Hitwise UK visits to Compare the Market have increased by 86% since the week ending the 27th December, as the chart reveals this corresponds with the traffic to Compare the Meerkat’s traffic. 21% of the people visiting Compare the Meerkat went directly to Compare the Market. Interestingly on average people are spending more time comparing Meerkat’s then they are the Market.

Recent research from Hitwise UK reveals that searches for ‘wood burning stoves’ reached their highest ever level this October. Searches have almost tripled since October 2007. With the economic downturn, rising fuel costs and growing concern for the environment, wood burning stoves are being recognized as a cheap alternative way to heat homes. The top 10 searches for wood burning stoves included searches for ‘discount wood burning stoves’, ‘cheap wood burning stoves’, and ‘second hand wood burning stoves’.

According to Hitwise UK, ‘iceland’ was the fifth fastest moving search term last week with searches increasing by 85%. The top 5 searches containing the term ‘iceland’ included searches for ‘iceland banks’, ‘iceland news’ and ‘iceland bank’. This reveals peoples interest in the current economic crisis in Iceland, particularly as it was revealed last week that many UK councils have invested large sums of money in Iceland over the past few years. Interestingly searches for ‘iceland’ have also increased traffic to the budget supermarket Iceland by 17% over the last week.

Recent research from Hitwise UK, shows that searches for 'credit crunch' reached their highest ever level last week, increasing three-fold over the last four weeks. 7 of the top 10 websites receiving traffic from searches for 'credit crunch' are news sources, headed up by BBC News which is picking up 18% of searches, and followed by Google News, MSN News and Guardian Business. Wikipedia is the most visited website, however, capturing one in five searches.

According to Hitwise UK, daily Internet visits to the Bradford & Bingley website over the last two days have increased by 105% with the website reaching #30 within the Banks & Financial Institutions category on the 28 September. Interest in the fate of Bradford & Bingley started to increase significantly two weeks ago, with searches for 'bradford & bingley' increasing by 220% over the two weeks ending 27 September.

According to Hitwise UK, visits to the Business & Finance - Stocks & Shares category reached the highest daily peak yesterday (17 September) since August 2007, as concern mounted over the state of the financial market in the UK. Yahoo! Finance UK has been the number one visited site in the category since Monday; with daily visits increasing by 25% from Monday 15 to Wednesday 17 and visits up by 84% week on week. Thisismoney.co.uk and the London Stock Exchange website also saw sharp weekly increases in visits, 88% and 97% respectively (comparing Wednesday to Wednesday).

According to Hitwise UK, daily UK Internet traffic to the APACS website has increased eight-fold from the 20 May to 27 May, with Tuesday's announcement that some banks are now offering faster bank transfers. One in five visits to the website on Tuesday was from the BBC News website and one in ten from the Guardian. Seven of the top ten sites downstream from APACS were bank websites.

According to Hitwise UK visits to the HM Revenue and Customs website were 16% higher last week than the same week last year. Searches for "tax return" and "self assessment" started much later this time with searches increasing from the 29th December 2007 compared to the 9th December during 2006.

UK Internet visits to Business and Finance – Business Information websites reached their highest peak in over four months yesterday (22 January), following a turbulent few days in the world stock markets and the announcement that the US Federal Reserve is to cut interest rates. The three most visited sites in the category were: Yahoo UK and Ireland Finance (uk.finance.yahoo.com), the Financial Times (www.ft.com), and Advanced Financial Network (www.advfn.com).

According to Hitwise UK, daily UK Internet visits to the Northern Rock website tripled on Friday 14th September when it was the 15th most visited website in the Banks & Financial Institutions category. One in six visits to Northern Rock on the 14th September came from a News website, an increase of 150% on the same day the week before. Searches for "northern rock" increased five-fold during the week ending 15th September and average session duration doubled from 5 to 10 minutes. Now You Know.

According to Hitwise UK, Internet visits to the Debt Advice Trust website have increased by 44% from the 18th August to the 8th September. The top search term containing the word "debt" over the last four weeks was "debt consolidatIon" with searches for this term doubling during this period. Now You Know.
