Coles Runs Away With Giveaway

In what is one of the more competitive online tussles, Coles, Woolworths Australia and ALDI Australia have all held the number one position in the Hitwise Australia Shopping and Classifieds – Grocery and Alcohol category over the course of the year. However, it seems Coles (www.coles.com.au) has emerged from the pack to be the runaway leader with an increase in market share of 146% for the two weeks ending 16/05/2009.

Coles received over 8% of its traffic from Rewards Central Australia (www.rewardscentral.com.au) and accounted for 35.14% market share of the Shopping and Classifieds - Grocery and Alcohol category, which was over 200% more than ALDI (www.aldi.com.au) who followed in second place for the week ending 16/05/2009.

The ’Coles Giant Gift Card Giveaway’ competition being run at the moment, with prizes of up to $100,000 is also sparking good interest, with the term ‘coles giveaway’ contributing 0.87% of all traffic last week to the Coles website. Now You Know.

Christmas Planning Online

With the festive season on its way, it seems New Zealanders have commenced preparation for Christmas as early as October. Searches for 'christmas' increased by 40% between the weeks ending 11/10/2008 and 08/11/2008 (rolling 12 weeks).

The top 3 terms searched for during the 12 weeks ending 08/11/2008 were, 'christmas decorations', 'christmas in the park' (concert) and 'christmas games' indicating what's top of mind. Christmas Treasures (www.christmastreasures.co.nz) received the greatest volume of traffic (45.04%) from the search term 'christmas decorations'.

During the same period, Northpole (www.northpole.com) a website which contains stories and activities for kids, as well as gift ideas, holiday recipes, games and an email address for Santa, was the number one website to receive traffic from the search term 'christmas'. Now you know.

According to search terms directing traffic to the Shopping & Classifieds – Ticketing industry during 4 weeks ending 13/09/2008, some of the most sort after tickets by Australian Internet users include tickets to the AFL and the musicals Wicked, Billy Elliot and Phantom of the Opera. During the week ending 28/06/2008, Singapore Internet users spent an average of 20 minutes and 48 seconds visiting Flower and Gifts websites, 8 minutes more than the average visit time spent on all sites. Comparatively, Australians and New Zealanders are seemingly less engaged with the task of purchasing gifts and flowers online, spending an average of just 5 minutes & 53 seconds and 5 minutes & 5 seconds respectively. According to Hitwise, for the week ending 15/03/2008, New Zealand visits to Shopping – Classifieds websites accounted for 7.18% market share of all Internet visits. While this is percentage is slightly less than the US, which enjoys 9.7% share of US Internet visits to online shopping, it is ahead of the Australian market where only 5.73% of Internet visits are directed towards shopping websites. Fast Moving Retail Categories for Online Holiday Shopping in Singapore

According to Hitwise Singapore data, ‘Apparel and Accessories’ was the fastest-growing retail sub-sector amongst the Shopping & Classifieds industry, comparing weeks ending 11 November 2006 and 10 November 2007. Apparel and Accessories websites increased 3.03% over a yearly period to account for 9.26% of online shopping visits. According to Hitwise Australia, the #1 website to receive traffic from the search term 'jewellery' during the 4 week period ending 09/06/2007 was Just Jewellery, which held 13.38% of the market share, followed by Nina's Jewellery and www.oo.com.au. Search term analysis of traffic received from the term 'jewellery' shows peaks around Christmas, Valentines Day and Mothers Day, with the highest peak occurring week ending December 23.

According to Hitwise Singapore, some of the most popular search terms driving traffic to the Shopping & Classifieds - Apparel and Accessories industry for the 24 weeks ending 26/05/2007 included brands such as ‘coach’, ‘gucci’, ‘giordano’, ‘victoria secret’, ‘prada’ and ‘tiffany’. The industry received 19.76% of its traffic from search engines, with Google Singapore accounting for 5.86% of that.
