Rather than buy a new place in the midst of the economic downturn, it appears people still wanting to upgrade their residential status are turning to renovation. A look at traffic to the Hitwise Category Lifestyle – House and Garden category shows a 24% year on year increase, contributing 0.21% of traffic to All Categories for the week ending 15/11/08.
Much of this improvement can be attributed to the performance of a few strong performers. Home Improvement Pages (www.homeimprovementpages.com.au) is top of the list contributing 7.25% of traffic for the week - an impressive 161% increase on this time last year, whilst another big mover Notebook: Magazine (www.homehints.com.au) currently holding down fourth place, has seen their market share jump from 1.66% twelve weeks ago (week ending 23/08/2008) to 4.86% for the week ending 15/11/08.
Meanwhile, despite a 20% drop in searches for “homes for sale” compared to the same time last year (based on 4 week rolling period), www.realestate.com.au is staying buoyant thanks in part to its renovation portal - renovate.realestate.com.au which has increased its market share by 151% over the last 52 weeks (week ending 15/11/2008 amongst All Categories).
