Ahead of the much anticipated ASX listing of carsales.com.au (www.carsales.com.au) on 10 September, here are some stats on the leading Automotive - Classifieds website. Last week’s ranking as the 56th most popular website in Australia (week ending 29/08/2009), was the second highest ever achieved by carsales.com.au. The website has been able to maintain a strong position throughout the past year (ranging between 52nd and 75th amongst all websites), even in the face of an overall decrease in traffic to the online Automotive category.
In July 2009 carsales.com.au attracted 24% of all visits to the Hitwise Automotive - Classifieds category. Putting this into perspective: Seek (www.seek.com.au) accounted for 28% of visits to Business and Finance - Employment and Training websites; Realestate.com (www.realestate.com.au) received 39% of visits to Business and Finance - Property websites; and Wotif (www.wotif.com.au) attracted 7% of all traffic to the Travel - Destinations and Accommodation category. Reviewing Hitwise data over the last three years provides a window into the current predicament of the Automotive Manufacturing Industry. Visits to this category have understandably taken a serious hit as people tighten their belts, with Manufacturing websites experiencing an all-time low, accounting for just 0.12% of visits amongst all Australian websites, during the week ending 08/11/2008.
Amongst the parent Automotive category specifically, Manufacturers websites have also hit rock bottom accounting for just 9.54% of all visits to the Automotive industry – a decrease of 25% from the same time last year.
The Automotive category as a whole is propped up by Automotive Classifieds websites such as Carsales.com.au, which have their bases covered by catering to both buyers and sellers of new and used vehicles. Carsales actually has experienced a 10% increase on their market share of visits compared to last year within the Automotive Category. Now you know.

According to Hitwise New Zealand, market share of visits to the online Automotive industry decreased by 11.33% year-on-year as of July 2008. An analysis of the top Automotive search terms suggests that since August last year, New Zealanders are increasingly interested in renting rather than purchasing, with car purchase-related search terms such as ‘car sales’, ‘car auction’ and ‘car auctions’ decreasing by 38.10%, 44.17% and 40.54% respectively (between weeks ending 25/08/2007 and 09/08/2008). Comparatively however, car rental-related searches have spiked dramatically, with searches for ‘car rental’, ‘car hire’ and ‘rental car’ increasing by 838.26%, 783.05% and 1245% respectively during the same period. With petrol prices out of control, Australians are looking to alternative modes of transport to minimise petrol costs. During the period 24/05/2008 – 21/06/2008 searches for ‘scooter’ increased by 71.4%, however during the same period no change was seen in the percentage of searches for ‘car sales’ (based on 4 week rolling search term share to Shopping and Classifieds – Automotive industry). During the recent Australian Grand Prix, for the week ending 15/03/2008 Hitwise Australia reports that V Plates (www.vplates.com.au) , a service offering customised number plates was the second most visited downstream, website from www.grandprix.com.au , capturing 3.04% of visits. According to Hitwise Singapore, over the 24 weeks ending 15 December 2007 ‘toyota’ (4.05%), ‘honda’ (3.05%), ‘mitsubishi’ (2.35%), ‘toyota singapore’ (2.06%) and ‘subaru’ (1.28%) were the top 5 search terms directing traffic to websites in the Automotive – Manufacturers industry. According to Hitwise Hong Kong, despite the similarities between Automotive – Classifieds and Automotive – Dealerships, the two industries attract traffic from varied sources. As of the week ending 01/12/2007, Social Networking and Forums was the second most popular industry to refer traffic to Automotive – Classifieds websites, accounting for 20.76%, while Email Services and Search Engines accounted for just 6.13% and 5.42% respectively. According to Hitwise Hong Kong, the Porsche website (www.porsche.com) had consistently maintained its #1 ranking in the Automotive - Manufacturers industry between 28/07/07 – 25/08/07. However, during the week ending 01/09/07 Honda Hong Kong (www.honda.com.hk) experienced an increase of over 38% and consequently became the #1 website in the Automotive - Manufacturers industry, accounting for 7.26% of the market share. According to Hitwise Australia, men and women are visiting different types of automotive websites when searching for a new car online. As of the 12 weeks ending 01/09/07, men accounted for 59.13% of traffic to the Automotive - Classifieds industry, while in the Automotive - Manufacturers industry it was women who were in the majority with 54.12%.
