This Week’s Spelling Bee: B – A – R – A – C – K

February 01, 2009

With the inauguration of America’s 44th President being such a momentous occasion, it seems only fitting to dedicate not one but TWO Hitwise-To-Goes on the theme this week.

We have learnt what a significant impact the inauguration had online recently, but a quick scan of the top variations on the search term ‘obama’ highlights another lesson - the need to optimise your SEM campaigns to include spelling mistakes. Of the 9,000+ variations recorded in Hitwise Australia over the last four weeks ending 24/01/2009, #7 ‘barak obama’ and #8 ‘barrack obama’ , were both spelled incorrectly and had low click-through rates of under 50%.

With News and Media websites accounting for 31% of downstream traffic from the correctly spelled ‘barack obama’, you would imagine that those news websites waking up to this juicy opportunity might enjoy a nice bunk up in traffic as a result.
Now you know.
