Crikey… They’re Throwing a Few Good Punches

The recently launched News Limited website, The Punch (www.thepunch.com.au), is catching up to competitor Crikey (www.crikey.com.au) – increasing its market share for June by 79% in the News and Media industry (comparing the weeks ending 06/06/2009 and 27/06/2009). The Punch has steadily increased rankings since launching, and trailed the Crikey website (ranked at 82nd) by only 10 spots last week. Now you know.

The Rove show received the second-highest television ratings since it first aired on Channel Ten, with the appearance of Kevin Rudd and Bruno (aka Sacha Baron Cohen). In line with this, the Rove Daily website (www.rovedaily.com.au) also peaked in visits online, increasing its market share by 14.3% on 28/06/2009 compared to the previous Sunday in the Television category. The spike in visits to Rove Daily also overflowed to Kevin Rudd’s website - Prime Minister of Australia's Homepage (www.pm.gov.au) which received 17.77% of its upstream traffic to from the Rove Daily website for that day - Go Ruddy! MJ Tops Fast Moving Search Terms in Australia and New Zealand

It’s no surprise that Michael Jackson was one of the most searched for celebrities online last week due to his untimely death. Leading Australia's top 10 fast moving searches for the week ending 27/06/2009 compared to the previous week was ‘michael jackson’ followed by ‘jeff goldblum’ who was rumoured to have fallen to his death on the set of his movie in New Zealand last Thursday, which turned out to be an Internet hoax. Featuring at number 4 was Charlie’s Angel’s ‘farrah fawcett’ who also died last week.

Gordon Ramsay’s recent visit to Melbourne and the publicity he received from making comments about A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw, have certainly increased curiosity online. The chef’s website Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (www.gordonramsay.com), jumped 104 places increasing its market share by over 150% within a week in the Food and Beverage industry (week ending 13/06/2009).
Interestingly, 6 of the top 10 search term variations for ‘tracey grimshaw’ for the 4 weeks ending 13/06/2009, included ‘ramsay ‘(or variations of his name). So, how does that saying go… ‘all publicity is good publicity’.

The website’s market share of traffic in the Business and Finance – Telecommunications category peaked at 50.45% on the day of the launch, a massive 793% increase from the previous day.
