Twitter Maintains Growth in Visits in Australia

I've had various readers and friends ask me for an update on Twitter, as anecdotally it appears to be gaining traction in Australia.

Visits to Twitter had a short term dip between September 2008 and November 2008, but have steadily climbed again to January 2009, and were at an all time high for the week ending 10 January 2009. Twitter has maintained its phenomenal yearly growth rate, increasing year-on-year in web visits by 517.9% (w/ending 10 January 2009 compared to the same week last year).

Twitter's recent growth is due to a resurgence in referrals from Facebook, which is also maintaining a strong following amongst Australian Internet users. The linked growth highlights the continued rise in the use of the Internet as a networking tool in social and business contexts vs the consumption of information.

I also suspect that increased visits to Twitter this week has been prompted by Australian professionals returning to the workplace: Twitter is a particularly useful industry networking and knowledge sharing tool. Thoughts?

Woot! Thanks Sandra.

I agree with you about the return to work and the return to Twitter.

The only thing I can't work out is the big dip from October - December and now. Could it be that we Twits were all busy in the leadup to Christmas and didn't visit the site as much? Are we beginning to access Twitter through the Twitter App on Facebook - and not visiting the site?

Thanks Con - the dip at the end of last year has me puzzled too. I think some of the spikes we're seeing in the above chart could be due to new users coming on board vs established users who are likely to be using Twitter on third-party platforms, including mobile. One theory could be that there is some sort of network effect where new users accumulate in short spurts, rather than incrementally?

Wow, that is fantastic. What a great result for Social Media Marketing.

I think we see a growth in that, particularly with the increase of people using Twitter from mobile phones too.

Will that be the trend of 2009?

If someone joins and then sends out invites to all their contacts then that could explain jumps in traffic but you would have thought that would even itself out.

Agreed I use twitter at work, its fast becoming my news source replacing going direct to other sites

Twitter has been getting quite a few mentions in the press lately too, which would spur a number of visits. I have seen a lot of people in the workplace signing up but few actively using the service yet.

Thanks Ross - agree that press coverage of Twitter is probably helping uptake of the service. However I think Twitter's relevance as a personalised news source to each user is behind its success to date.

Thanks Sandra. Interesting report. I think Australian's have been struggling to really get Twitter and what it is about. We have not reached that infamous tipping point yet when there are enough relevant and interesting local tweets to follow. It looks like things are starting to change though which is great news.

Hi Sandra,
Thanks for the insight. I'm wondering whether you've got some useful info on WHO is using Twitter? I'm sure there's a skew towards early adopter, savvy tech professionals, but I wonder how mainstream the average Tweeter is?
For many social marketers, this sort of info is important and there seems to be little robust data around, but lots of conjecture. Does Hitwise have any insight into this?

We do provide demographics stats on microblogging sites such as Twitter - early indicators that Twitter indeed is receiving a strong representation of visits from educated households - we'll be tracking and reporting on changes in Twitter's audience profile as its usage becomes more mainstream

Hi Sandra, Ive noticed that more businesses seem to be signing up for Twitter - to check it out. However as of yet not much "everyday" people are getting on line. Upshot it at the moment its great to connect with likeminded businesses overseas and maybe in Australia but at the moment not as good to connect with your average person or consumers.
