I'll round up my series of posts on domestic and international politics by looking at the issues that are on the cards leading up to the Australian federal election this year. Hitwise search data provides a snapshot of the pressing concerns amongst voters:

You'll see that searches for 'David Hicks' and 'climate change' for the week ending February 10, 2007 have surpassed searches for 'abortion' and 'Iraq' which have long-been search terms to deliver high traffic volumes to the Hitwise Lifestyle - Politics category.

Hi Steven,
That's a fair point - 11.36% of searches for 'abortion' resulted in visits to Health & Medical websites, as opposed to 7.2% to Politics websites.
Abortion however was one of the top 10 generic search terms in the Lifestyle - Politics category for the 4 weeks ending 10 February 2007 which makes it fair to say it's still top of mind in the political debate.
See my post on RU486 for more analysis on this topic.

Hi Sandra,
It's reasonable to presume that a fair chunk of those searches for "abortion" for because people were looking for the service, not the political debate. Can you confirm this by tracking the sites/pages they were clicking through?
On other hand, we can probably assume that few people were looking for holiday advice on Iraq...
