I was intrigued by a television report the other night on ABC (Australia) that stated that outbound tourists from China were expected to grow to nearly 19 million visitors overseas for the second half of 2006, which to put in proportion, is close to the current population of Australia!
This prompted me to do some further reading on Asia's burgeoning market of middle-class travellers. This CAPA article goes on further to state that Hong Kong travellers in particular would lead the way, with an estimated 3.25 million outbound travellers leading up to December this year. Hitwise monitors Internet usage in the Hong Market, including visits to the online Travel industry. I've put together a custom list below which shows the top 10 websites in the Hitwise Travel - Destinations & Accommodation category for overseas locations, to give an indication as to where Hong Kong Internet users are seeking to travel.

You'll notice that Korea, Japan and Thailand are common destinations in this list. Hitwise Industry charting shows over a 24-month period that visits to the Travel category by Hong Kong Internet users peak around August-September during the summer holidays. Travel operators in Australia and New Zealand have ample time to plan ahead to compete for this market online.
