Trade Me's Referral Traffic Propels Smaps to Top Travel - Maps Site

August 25, 2006

Our Hitwise Fast Movers Alert brought to my attention a week ago to smaps, which is a new mapping venture by Trade Me . I checked in today to see how it was going and was surprised to see that it has taken the top Travel - Maps position in NZ website visits for the week ending August 19, 2006 in the space of only three weeks.

Trade Me, the leading Shopping & Classifieds website visited by New Zealand users, accounted for 49% of smaps upstream traffic for the week ending August 19, 2006. This not only demonstrates that the referral of traffic from Trade Me has been instrumental in the success of smaps' launch, but the potential traffic power of a link on the Trade Me homepage.

smaps now holds close to 30% of market share in the Travel - Maps industry, in what has become an increasingly competitive space over the last 3 months, with leading players including Google Maps, Wises and new comer, Yellow Pages Maps.

The technology behind smaps is powered by New Zealand start-up, ProjectX Technology, who also created mash-up, Zoom In which I've written about before here. Zoom In ranked at #6 position for the week ending August 19, 2006.
