The dominance of popular NZ auctions website, Trade Me (www.trademe.co.nz) proves there is huge scope for more competitive offerings in online retail in New Zealand.
In the leadup to the holiday season, Trade Me held close to half of all online Shopping and Classifieds activity by New Zealand Internet users, with 47.6% market share for the week ending October 22, 2005.
Trade Me poses a significant threat to both online and offline retailers. Its nearest pureplay competitor, eBay (www.ebay.com) accounted for 4.2% market share during the same week.
This contrasts with eBay's dominance in Australia with its local website grabbing 36.7% of Shopping and Classifieds traffic amongst Aussie web surfers.
Trade Me's success is the envy of many, including Telecom who announced earlier this month they would launch a rival auctions website, codenamed "Sparkys". Recently launched classifieds service, Sell Me Free (www.sellmefree.co.nz) has already jumped to 5th position in the Hitwise Classifieds category, week ending October 22. We can expect ahead a changing NZ online retail landscape with these new players..
