Celebrities – from the A-list Hollywood star to the Z-list Big Brother housemate, we’re obsessed with them, and no-one seems to attract more public attention currently than the nation’s favourite Geordie, Cheryl Cole.

We monitor over 50 million search terms a month in the UK, and given the astonishing variety of terms people type into search engines like Google, it’s amazing that so many are celebrity related.
The question of who is the most popular celebrity online is a difficult one to answer. As you might imagine, popular trends change very quickly as new gossip emerges about various celebrities. Last Friday for example, Wayne Rooney was the most searched for celebrity in the UK after his contract debacle at Manchester United. By Saturday however, the X-Factor was the big topic of conversation and Cher Lloyd was the most searched for personality online.
Over the last 12 weeks though, the celebrity that has been most consistently searched for is Cheryl Cole. Of all the millions of search clicks online in the last 12 weeks, 1 in every 5,000 of them was for Cheryl. In second place was consumer champion, and former number one of this list, Martin Lewis, followed by singer Katy Perry in third.
The top 50 most searched for celebs over the last 12 weeks are detailed below along with their overall rank in the most popular search terms to All Categories.

By far the most popular group of celebrities in the rankings were singers. Of the top 100 ranked celebrities, more than a third (36) of the personalities were singers. Twilight star Robert Pattinson was the most popular actor whilst co-star Kristen Stewart was the fifth most searched for Hollywood star.
