Flag searches reflect the patriotic mood

June 03, 2010

You can’t have failed to notice the number of flags flying in the UK over the last few weeks. Many of those hanging from cars, pubs and windows across the land are England flags, but other nations are represented as well. The reason behind the sudden outburst of national pride is, of course, the World Cup. And like any ‘real world’ phenomena these days, it’s also taking place online: as the chart below illustrate, UK flag-related searches have been on the increase since the start of April.

The table below lists the 20 most popular of the 34,000 flag-related search terms used in the UK over the last 12 weeks. Ignoring the branded term ‘green flag’, the most popular term over this period was the inclusive ‘flags of the world’, followed by ‘england flag’. The French flag is the next most popular, although the sixth ranked term ‘french flag bottom wiping’ may imply that searches weren’t entirely football related. After France and England, the next most popular flags, with the exceptions of Russia and Wales, are all of countries playing the World Cup: USA, Spain, Italy, Germany and Brazil.
