The decline of Bebo

April 07, 2010

Following the announcement that AOL is to sell or shut down Bebo, now is as good a time as any to highlight how well the social network is performing in the UK. The table below lists the 10 most visited social networking sites in the UK last week, with Facebook picking up over half of the traffic. Bebo still ranks fourth in the category (and 31st in All Categories), but Facebook receives 33-times more visits.

Of course it hasn’t always been this way, and just three years ago Bebo was the most popular social network in Britain. However, the turning point came in the summer of 2007 when Facebook overtook Bebo (and MySpace). As you can see from the chart below, since then it has been a pretty clear cut story of growth (in the case of Facebook) and decline (for Bebo and MySpace) since then.

Hey Robin

Thanks so much for sharing this!

Although it would be great if you could share some data on Twitter's UK usage and perhaps blogs and forums too? Preferably all on one graph?

If I'm not mistaken it's been almost a year since you released any new data on Twitter:

and almost two years since you released any data on blogs:

great info, always interesting to see this sort of stuff!

is this data based on website visits? if so, it would be very interesting to see stats for Twitter that take into account usage on 3rd party apps, as i would expect share would increase considerably for Twitter
