One of the fastest moving search terms in our Music category last week was ‘tunechecker’, the name of MoneySavingExpert Martin Lewis’s new MP3 music download price comparison website. Last week the site ranked 49th in our Music category and, as you can see from the chart below, is already picking up significantly more traffic than CompareDownload, its main competitor in the UK.

During the week ending December 5th, 31% of its traffic came from webmail services (presumably it was advertised in the weekly Martin’s Money email), but last week the MoneySavingExpert homepage became its biggest source of traffic.
Like most comparison sites, TuneChecker works by sending visitors to the relevant website to make their purchase. Therefore our downstream data gives a good indication of which music download sites are receiving more traffic from TuneChecker. The table below lists the top ten beneficiaries last week (w/e 12/12/09), with Tesco Entertainment, Amazon UK and TuneTribe picking up the most traffic.

While this may contribute a huge a amount of traffic to sites such as the first two in the table, it has had a big impact on the smaller TuneTribe. For the last couple of weeks TuneChecker has accounted for over 60% of the site’s traffic, and as result visits to TuneTribe have increased by 200%.

It’ll be interesting to see whether traffic to these sites is any higher next week thanks to the contest between Rage Against the Machine and The X Factor’s Joe McElderry for Christmas number one spot. Follow Hitwise UK on Twitter for updates on this crucial topic!
