Will Rage Against the Machine beat X Factor winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas number one spot?

December 14, 2009

Following Richard Seymour’s successful prediction a couple of weeks ago that Joe McElderry would win the X Factor, we though it would be interesting to see if our data could help answer another pressing question: could the Internet campaign to send Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name’ to the Christmas number 1 spot instead of Joe McElderry’s ‘The Climb’ succeed?

And looking at our search data, the answer is… maybe! The chart below illustrates the volume of searches for three terms: “rage against the machine”, “ratm” and “joe mcelderry”. Searches for the term “rage against the machine” increased by almost 600% last week, and actually picked up a slightly higher volume than “joe mcelderry” Add in the fact that ‘Killing in the Name Of’ is currently sitting atop the iTunes chart, and it looks like a distinct possibility!

Of course, there is the danger that RATM fans take the ‘Killing in the Name’ lyrics a little too literally, choosing not to do what the Internet tells them, and Simon Cowell and co have the last laugh…

Either way Cowell's going to make some money. I want Rage to be Xmas number 1 'The Climb' is such a weak song and it looks like RATM are bookies favorite to win check it out here http://bit.ly/5s0RD5 plus there's a list of sites selling 'Killing In The Name Of' and prices, I think Amazon is the cheapest though.
