Over the last couple of years we’ve highlighted how the websites of high street retailers pick up more traffic than their online only competitors (e.g. Amazon UK, Play.com, ASOS, etc.) at Christmas time. As the chart below illustrates, the growing power of the high street retailers online has been a long term trend.

However, looking at this year’s data it seems as if the gap between the two types of retailer has begun to stabilize. Last week (w/e 28/11/09) high street retailers received 18% more UK Internet visits than their online only competitors, but for the equivalent week last year (w/e 29/11/2008) the gap was higher, at 25%. This is first time that the gap has closed: in 2007 the high street retailers received 22% more than the online only stores, while in 2006 the online only players actually received 5% more visits than the high street websites.
For more information on the most visited retail websites in the UK, have a look at the latest IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List, which lists the top 50 last month. In the run up to Christmas we’ll be producing a lot more retail data, so keep an eye on the blog and our Twitter feed for more info.

Clothes will always need to be sold on the high street. Paper books and DVDs are are dead... the later of which we can do without.
