UK Internet traffic to Cricket websites shot up over the weekend as England regained the Ashes from Australia. As the chart below illustrates, UK Internet visits to our Cricket category reached their highest level for three years yesterday. Unfortunately I don’t have access to 2005 data that would allow us to compare this with the last time that the England team won the tournament.

Our Cricket category includes over 100 specialist cricket websites, but is dominated by Cricinfo. Last week the site picked just over half of all the visits to the category, and it also had a record day yesterday. However, a lot of cricket related traffic goes to generalist rather than specialist sports sits, in particular BBC Sport and Sky Sports. As the chart below illustrates, both of these sites experienced over the last few days. Of course, much of this traffic is related to other sports (most notably the start of the football season and the European Grand Prix), but it is also noticeable that yesterday was the second busiest day for both sites over the last three years.

Given the friendly rivalry that we enjoy with our colleagues in Melbourne and Sydney, I thought that it would also be interesting to chart Australian traffic to our Cricket category. Strangely, they don’t seem to have experienced the same increases over the last few weeks…

Thanks Robin, another good post. But it's presumably so high because the TV coverage was not on terrestrial TV here, but was in Australia. I would guess also that internet usage this time would be higher than 2005 because of this issue, when the last ashes was on Channel4.
But that is an amazing stat that the humble sport of Cricket has made two of the biggest sports sites in the world have their 2nd best day for 3 years - But what was the best day?
