Netbooks account for 1 in every 7 computer searches

December 11, 2008

In the next instalment of Hitwise Client Intelligence Analyst Richard Seymour’s analysis of the consumer electronics market, Richard talks about another fast-growing consumer electronics area – Netbooks, the small to medium sized, light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient laptops optimized for web usage.

Whilst the computer market as a whole is predicted to weaken over the coming months, Netbooks themselves are expected to continue to fly off the shelves as Christmas gifts, especially if our search data is anything to go by. With new launches and upgrades occurring regularly in the run up to Christmas, interest will continue to pick up, with consumers trading down from more expensive laptops because of the current economic conditions

Here is a list of the top 10 most searched for computers by UK Internet users during November 2008:

1. Sony Vaio
2. Samsung NC10
3. Acer Aspire One
4. Apple iMac
5. Apple Mac
6. Apple Macbook
7. Msi wind
8. Asus Eee
9. Toshiba Satellite L300
10. Advent 4211

Though Sony Vaio was the most searched for computer, Dell was the most searched-for computer brand in November, accounting for 1 in 7 computer searches. Acer was the second most popular computer brand, helped by the performance of its netbook, the Acer Aspire One. Netbooks as a collective accounted for 1 in 7 of all computer searches in November.

In addition to the Acer Aspire One, the top 10 most searched-for computers during October included four other netbook models: the Samsung NC10, Asus Eee, Advent 4211, and the MSI Wind. Dell’s netbook, the Inspiron Mini 9 fell just outside of the top 10. The chart below shows the top search terms for these top netbooks, and their journey from October through November. Special mention must go to the continued rise of the Samsung NC10 netbook, which was the fastest growing netbook since the beginning of October, with a 675% increase in searches. The Samsung netbook has overtaken the Acer netbook to become the most searched for netbook in November.

It doesn't suprise me to see the NC10 featured high up the list. I started a small community site/blog around my new netbook last month and was amazed to see just how much traffic the site got so quickly. Unfortunately I have dropped off Google for "samsung NC10" (hopefully to return?!) but still get a lot of traffic for niche searches.

It will be interesting to see that graph again once the new kid on the block is released!

Hi Jez - keep an eye on the blog, as this is certainly data that we'll be regularly updating.

Thanks, Robin
