Just another Mega Monday?

December 10, 2008

Yesterday our friends at IMRG put out a press release stating that Mega Monday (i.e. last Monday, December 8th) online sales volumes were up 18% year on year. According to James Roper, CEO of IMRG, “Online sales are holding up well, considering the economic conditions, with both volumes and values significantly higher than last year. The ratio of researching to buying is also much greater, and researching started earlier this year, as Christmas shoppers work hard to track down the best deals.”

That last sentence about researching is significant, and the press release also contained some Hitwise data illustrating that visits to online retail websites have already peaked this year. As the chart below illustrates, visits to our Shopping and Classifieds category reached their highest level on Sunday November 30th, which was slightly above last Sunday’s (December 7th) figure.

This peak may seem early, but in fact a similar thing happened last year, when UK Internet visits to Shopping and Classifieds websites reached their highest pre-Christmas level on November 25th 2007. However, the overall peak in visits to online retailers last holiday season actually occurred after Christmas, on Boxing Day. Given the economic conditions and British consumers’ hunger for bargains and discounts, it seems likely that the post Christmas period will be even more important this year.

As always we’ll be reporting on events as they happen online, so keep an eye on the blog for the latest data. Yesterday we also hosted the last of our pre-Christmas retail webinars, which included some more in depth analysis on this topic. You can listen to a recording here.

That's good detail Robin. I have noticed with my clients that their traffic peaks on a sunday too. So should we not listen to talk about "Mega Monday"? Or should there be a Super Sunday to look forward to every year? It'd be intersting to see which goods online shoppers are looking for this year, over last year. Plus whether there is a recession tint to the keywrods searched.
Thanks
