Chelsea: flowers or football?

May 29, 2008

Flowers were more popular than football in the UK last week, as the Champions League final in Moscow coincided with the annual Chelsea Flower Show in London. Searches for ‘chelsea flower show’ tripled during the week ending 24 May and were 30% greater than the combined percentage of searches for ‘chelsea’ and ‘chelsea fc’.

Throughout the year ‘chelsea fc’ is the most commonly used term when looking for the football club, followed closely by searches for the generic term ‘chelsea’. Over the last four weeks 55% of people searching for the term ‘chelsea’ visited the official club website, www.chelseafc.com. Last week was the biggest spike in interest for the London based club since last September - up 65% from the week before - and the website became the 11th most visited website in the Football category. By comparison, Manchester United, who were victorious in Moscow last week, overtook Liverpool FC as the most visited football website.

Searches for ‘john terry’ tripled last week, with ‘john terry jokes’ the most popular variation on the term after the Chelsea captain slipped on the pitch whilst taking the potentially match winning penalty. The Telegraph newspaper picked up the majority of visits from searches for ‘john terry jokes’, due to an article which listed the jokes being emailed around about his unfortunate miss.
