Google Calendar Gaining Traction

While Google Calendar is still only 0.01% of visits to the top 20 Google Properties, as Bill wrote last week, I noticed an uptick in traffic and decided to see how it's been faring since it was launched in mid-April.

Yahoo! and MSN calendars are still the dominant calendar services, with Yahoo! Calendar receiving a market share of visits that was 5.5 times greater than Google Calendar for the week ending May 20, 2006. MSN Calendar's market share was 4.8 times greater than Google Calendar in that week. However, in the past four weeks, as you can see on the chart below, the market share of visits to Google Calendar has increased by 51% (week ending 5/20/06 versus week ending 4/22/06) when the share of visits to Yahoo! Calendar and MSN Calendar have declined by 8% and 6% respectively.

Having a calendar service isn't necessarily a cornerstone of having a portal, as usage doesn't come close approaching that for features like email and news, but an innovative, easy to use calendar could certainly help bring more users into to the Google collection of properties, and away from competitors.

I love Google's new calendar! I've used Yahoo's calendar as well, and I think Google's is far superior.

Give Google calendar another 6 months and you will find them in the middle of Yahoo! and MSN calendars in that chart if not at the top.
