Tony Blair War Criminal and Gordon Brown Gay?

May 24, 2007

Our Australian office issued a brilliant news release yesterday showing the top search terms that include the top two candidates' names for the upcoming election (John Howard and Kevin Rudd). The results are remarkable, in particular "lies", "jokes" and "children overboard" being combined with searches for John Howard. I repeated the exercise for the UK and found similarly amusing and revealing results.

The following table shows the top search terms entered into search engines in the four weeks to 19th May 2007 that include "Tony Blair", "Gordon Brown" and "David Cameron". I found Tony Blair War Criminal, Gordon Brown Gay and David Cameron Cloney Blair particularly interesting...

Search term suggesitons can be a measure of brand association - in that they reveal what consumers are combining in searches for a particular brand - or in this case, political leader.

I should mention that if you are wondering why consumers are searching for Gordon Brown Gay, it seems to be a result of some figures issued recently by PInk News on Brown's voting record.
