Bad Weather Drives Shoppers Online

May 30, 2007

The miserable weather over the bank holiday weekend caused a spike in online shopping in the UK. Retail and Travel websites reached their highest peak in share of UK Internet visits from the past two months. UK visits to retail websites were up 17% and visits to Travel websites were up 20% from Friday to Sunday.

Comparing week on week on Sunday, House and Garden websites saw the greatest gain, with visits up 22%. From Friday to Sunday, visits to House and Garden websites were up 34%. It seems that even though the bad weather meant we didn't need to do garden work or paint the fence - we prepared for future busy weekends in the yard.

Last week also saw a 20% increase in UK Internet searches for "weather". I was a bit surprised to see that there was barely a change in searches for "global warming" as the foul weather was blamed by many on climate change. Perhaps the chilly weather made us less concerned with global warming and more concerned with keeping warm!
