Who Will Win the Oscars - Search Data to Inform Your Bets

February 23, 2007

For those of you planning to place bets on the Oscars, we wanted to share some UK search data as a bit of intelligence on which winners UK consumers might choose. Keep in mind, the judges don't always follow popular opinion!

Actor in a Leading Role: Leonardo DiCaprio
If it were up to UK consumers, Leonardo DiCaprio would walk away with the Oscar for Actor in a Leading role. Will Smith comes in second and Forest Whitaker (AKA "Forest Who?") would not even be a contender.

Actress in a Leading Role: Helen Mirren
This was a closer call, but I put Helen Mirren in front, with Kate Winslet in second.

Best Picture: The Departed
I must admit, I am rooting for Babel. One of the best films I've seen in years. Alas, last year, I was rooting for Crash and well, my record speaks for itself. UK consumers might be a better gauge for you betting types - with The Departed beating out The Queen in both share of UK internet searches and the length of time the volume remained high. Also, notice the recent resurgence in interest? This might have more to do with the release of the DVD than the Oscars...

Documentary Feature: An Inconvenient Truth
Al Gore's movie is not only the run away winner in terms of share of UK internet searches for but also seems to have impacted awareness of global warming. We have seen a steady increase in searches for "global warming" since the film's release - supported by other efforts no doubt!

Hope this helps with your bets. Fingers cross for Babel (and lovely dresses!).
