MySpace #8 Source of Visits to HMV.co.uk
I was looking at clickstream traffic from MySpace and Bebo this morning for a reporter and noticed HMV.co.uk among the downstream sites from MySpace. In fact, the site ranked as the third highest downstream Shopping & Classifieds site from MySpace Music last week, after eBay UK and eBay. The #8 site sending visits to HMV.co.uk last week was MySpace, accounting for 1.98% of site visits and ahead of Yahoo! UK & Ireland Search and MSN UK Search. Bebo ranked #19, accounting for 0.65% of site visits.

HMV.co.uk is not the only music retailer receiving visits from MySpace. MySpace was the #10 site sending visits to sites in the Hitwise Shopping and Classifieds - Music category, accounting for 1.43% of category visits. MySpace ranked ahead of MSN UK Search and Yahoo! UK & Ireland search in share of upstream visits to the category. The #10 site sending visits to Play.com (the top ranked Shopping and Classifieds Music site based on visits last week) was MySpace, accounting for 1.44% of site visits.
MySpace's announcement that it will allow members to buy music on the site has caused much speculation on the impact on iTunes and the record companies. This will also have a significant impact on music retailers still suffering from the rise of iTunes.
To underscore the competition among music retailers and social networks, we should point out that the Scissor Sisters are currently featured on the MySpace homepage. Searches on the increasingly popular band sent 2% of UK visits in the past four weeks to HMV.co.uk and 1.56% to MySpace. The #8 search term sending visits to HMV.co.uk in the past four weeks is "scissor sisters". If you do a search for "scissor sisters" on Google, you will notice that HMV.co.uk has a prominent sponsored listing in the search engine results page.
