Google, Yahoo! and MSN UK Portal Comparison

To follow on Bill's wildly popular post on how Google, Yahoo! and MSN's properties stack up, I wanted to share the same data from the UK market. We are publishing these stats alongside the US market stats in a search report this week. If you'd like a side-by-side comparison, you can request a copy of the report from the link on our home page).

We found that similar to the US, Google's search property is hugely popular while many of its other sub-domains have yet to take off. Each Google property that is announced creates a storm of attention from commentators and search enthusiasts. However, UK consumers don't seem to be paying a whole lot of attention. The most extreme example if Google Finance, which ranked #201 in the week to 20th May 2006, with .04% of category visits. Yahoo! UK & Ireland Finance was ranked #1 by contrast, with 8.30% of category visits.

Google certainly does have a lot of weight to throw around, powering 77% of UK internet searches, but that doesn't mean that Google dominates in all of the verticals it enters - as the table below illustrates.

I had a good catch up with Simon Ferguson and Kevin May at Travolution today. We chatted about the possible impact of Troogle in the UK. Based on the table below, if Google were to enter the Travel vertical search space - it might not have the impact we in the industry expect.

I think Google are treading a fine line with these new products such as travel.
First they are going to have to generate a lot of content quickly to appear in both their own, and other, search engines.
And the slightest sniff that they are manipulating search to get their products above competitors in natural search would create an incredible firestorm across the web, and wipe millions off its stock

Hard to believe so many people in UK use hotmail, their services are so crappy, even yahoo is much better and off course gmail..

Hi Heather,

This is probably my first visit going through, Hitwise blogs. I must say it has been very useful reading. I really appreciate the simplicity in the information is presented.

I am looking for some fundamental statistics on global rankings of finance portals (Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, MSN Money Central, Forbes, WSJ, Marketwatcher, etc...)It would add tremendous value if you'd also have numbers on total number of unique visits, paid subscription base and average price that people spend of finance.

This would really help me finish my project report for my MBA classes. Your help here is much appreciated.
