Pete Burns Celebrity Big Brother Most Searched for Contestant

With the final Celebrity Big Brother taking place tonight, my colleague Jannie and I took a look at Hitwise Search Intelligence data to see which contestants UK internet users were searching for most. We found that while Chantelle Houghton - the only non celebrity in the house - may be favourite to win, Pete Burns is actually the most popular of the contestants online.

The share of UK internet searches for 'pete burns' were nearly two times higher last week than for 'traci bingham', the second most searched-for contestant. The share of searches for 'chantelle houghton' put the fake celebrity in third place, whose odds have shifted drastically this week. According to an article in Brand Republic today, Paddy Power were forced to cut Chantelle's odds on winning the Channel 4 series from 5/6 to 1/5 last night after a last-minute flurry of bets.

Celebrity Big Brother has also re-ignited interest in some of the other contestants:

- The share of UK searches that include the keywords 'ordinary boys' increased 79% to a peak in the week ending 14th January, from the four weeks previous. Preston's presence on Celebrity Big Brother seems to have ignited interest in the band with the re-released single "Boys will be Boys" reportedly climbing the charts.

- Interest in Traci Bingham is also sending increased visits to the former Baywatch star's official website, www.tracibingham.net. A quick look at the top search terms that include the star's name reveals a keen interest in photos of the star. After 'traci bingham', the highest volume search terms that include the star's name in the past four weeks were 'traci bingham topless', 'traci bingham playboy' and 'traci bingham pictures'.

- Pete Burns' band "Dead or Alive" has likewise seen a lift in UK internet searches which have coincided with the pop star's presence on Celebrity Big Brother. Searches for 'dead or alive' have nearly doubled since the first week of the year. The public's interest the 80's pop star's plastic surgery is also evident with searches for 'pete burns lips' and 'pete burns plastic surgery' also appearing among the highest volume search terms associated with the contestant's name.

- However, it would appear that Michael Barrymore's efforts to kick-start his career after Celebrity Big Brother may not materialise - the former star languishes in fifth place in a ranking of the most searched-for contestants, with Maggot from Goldie Lookin' Chain in 6th place.
