Search Term Pairs from Stockholm

October 20, 2005

This post follows on Bill Tancer's post about search term pairs that shows the relationship between searches for engagement rings and wedding dresses. I am in Stockholm and spoke yesterday morning at Search Engine Strategies. I included a "search term pairs" chart in my presentation that offers interesting insight into consumer search behaviour.

When I booked my trip to Stockholm, I booked my flight two weeks in advance and my hotel room a few days before leaving. My hypothesis was that consumers probably search for flights a week before they search for hotels and car hire. The following chart illustrates that in the example of 'flights to tenerife' and 'car hire tenerife' the lag is between one and two weeks.

Online Travel Agents send a confirmation of the flight booking with all sorts of wonderful deals on hotels, attractions and car hire. However, Hitwise Search Term Charting shows that when the customer receives that email confirmation he may not be ready to book his hotel. Consider reminding the customer a week later about the wonderful deals that you have on offer.
