The race is on for the must-have Christmas gift of 2005

With Christmas still three months away, the race is already in full swing for the must-have gadget of 2005 and Hitwise is closely monitoring its search data to identify contenders. Hitwise data showed this week that the latest Apple innovation, the iPod Nano, is likely to be among the favourites, along with the Playstation Portable.

Hitwise Search Intelligence reveals that searches for 'ipod nano' have overtaken searches for 'ipod' for the first time, and are set to overtake searches for 'psp' (Sony's PlayStation Portable) which launched to a fanfare of enthusiasm earlier this month. Since reaching a peak in the week ending 3rd September, searches for 'PSP' have since fallen by 34%.

Traffic to Apple's official UK website, www.apple.com/uk, increased by 46% from 1 September to the Nano's official launch date on 7 September, and peaked on 11 September with a 74% increase on its initial position. The second biggest downstream destination from www.apple.com/uk was the Apple Store (store.apple.com), attracting 1 in 5 downstream visits.

However the new Motorola-built iPod phone, the E1 ROKR, which uses Apples iTunes and plays music, is proving much less popular, as indicated by a relatively low volume of searches.

With Microsoft's Xbox 360 due out in early December, the race is just getting started. Stay tuned!
