« 1 Year Anniversary for Foursquare | Moshi Monsters in the US »
Facebook reached an important milestone for the week ending March 13, 2010 and surpassed Google in the US to become the most visited website for the week. Facebook.com recently reached the #1 ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day as well as the weekend of March 6th and 7th. The market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185% last week as compared to the same week in 2009, while visits to Google.com increased 9% during the same time frame. Together Facebook.com and Google.com accounted for 14% of all US Internet visits last week.

So where is Yahoo in all this? I've always read that Yahoo consistently gets more traffic than Yahoo, but Google gets more searches. Can you help set the record straight?

This is interesting, so Google is at second place now...
What does this really mean in terms of internet dominance?
Is this growth by Facebook sustainable? or it will go belly up like Myspace when the next best thing launch.?
Posted by Paul | March 15, 2010 09:16 PM
Just to clarify 'Most visited' = Unique users? It's a measure of all FB pages versus all G, or just the index pages?
Thanks!
Posted by Matt | March 16, 2010 06:15 AM
Amazing to see how fast traffic for FB went up in the last year. That's what every web company is dreaming about!
Posted by Sanya | March 16, 2010 07:09 AM
Sounds interesting, until you realize that a significant portion of Google's users don't go to www.google.com -- they search from their browsers' toolbars.
The comparison is worse if that graph only includes the main Google page and not GMail, Google Maps, and all those other properties. But it's not clear how "deep" the comparison goes.

who really cares 'bout being # 1.
key is to stay Top 10 for a long long run.
Posted by RivaRian | March 16, 2010 09:05 AM
Is this just GOOGLE.com domain or subdomains? It can't be their entire suite of sites/tools (which includs gmail)... and yes, most people use their toolbars and don't go to the Google site.
What is the sample size?
Posted by matt heindl | March 16, 2010 12:09 PM
@Andrew Kantor
Searches originating from a browser toolbar will still end up on Google, so those would be included in the traffic numbers. But good point about the other properties. Is that comparison just for google.com, or does it include all of the others. What about YouTube?
My guess is that these properties were not counted and that Google is still WAY out in front.

But you have to remember that Facebook, is pretty much JUST Facebook, Google, is how many different sites? Google Earth, Google Maps, etc, It will be fun to watch and see how they react though! :)

Having the highest number of hits during Christmas gives you a nice fuzzy feeling, but comparing Facebook to Google is like comparing the number of phone calls to the number of people who read a newspaper on a given day. A more worthwhile comparison would be Facebook against MySpace or Gmail, or Google against Yahoo or Bing.

I'm pretty confident to say that this will not last. Facebook will eventually flop just like all the other major social sites have in the past (think myspace). Google on the other hand may be around for ever. I mean think about it, when you tell someone to look something up on the internet you don't say it like that, you say just 'google' it. Also google has it's own religion now, just google it.
Posted by Dentist | August 2, 2010 08:45 PM
I wonder what type of visits are the fastest growing for both sites- What share of Google visits were from toolbar searches? How does Facebook's YOY change in visitors from mobile devices compare to Google's? Who's beating who on getting new engaged or converted visits? It would be cool to see how battles over specific segments are playing out, who each company values most, and why.

Even if Facebook got beaten by Google by a good margin, this is hardly a setback for them. The massive user base Facebook has gathered in just a few years is nothing short of amazing. Remember, they have only been around since 2004. Google, on the other hand, has had since 1998 to build their empire

Facebook has gone up like clockwork. Mr.Zuckerberg's social network site strucked people from all around the world. I believe Facebook still has to reach its full potential. When you think of countries where facebook is banned. countries such as syria, iran & pakistan. Despite Google has been here a much longer time than Facebook, it still amazes me Facebook could top google. Well at the end both of them are happy because they are #1 in both their fields. Social networking and search engines respectively.

Thanks for publishing this graphic, Heather. It seems that Facebook is going to dominate the game. Who had thought that Mr. Zuckerberg would create the "next big thing" after Google.. Facebook has so much more potential than Google nowadays and frankly I think Google should keep their eyeballs focussed on a takeover of Twitter if they want to stay in the "game". If they won't buy an existing succesful social media network like Twitter they're lost as when Facebook will develop a kind of search engine I don't think Google can't keep their pants up.. Be smart Google; buy Twitter!

I believe that the traffic numbers are high than Google's because of the number of people that
revisit the site each day. For instance my wife gets some type of notification on her Iphone each
time one of her friends post something to their wall which she then goes and takes a look at.
When you use Google you may only use it once a day when you need to look up something or grab an address or phone for a local business.
Definetly two different types of traffic as far as the mindset (entertainment vs. buying) the user is in when in he/she visits Facebook or Google.

I believe that the social networking corner of the web will eventually take over the search engines. As soon as facebook starts to offer something similar to what google can, then people will have a one stop shop and will no longer have a need for google and the other search engines. They can do the social networking and searching all from one place. Monopoly coming perhaps?

I don't think Google and Facebook will be in direct competition this coming year or two, they serve different kind of people and different services. Even FB launches their own search engine, people would still prefer Google. The same on if Google try another social site, FB is already established.

But have you ever imagined why the question has come up right now? Why not that came 2 to 3 yrs ago? It shows there is something wrong there with Google or there is something very good there with FB. Anyway I think Google should be aware of Facebook and its rapid progress. And should not try to interfere in social bzness.

It will be hard for a competing social networking site (and there are many attempts at creating such sites) to supplant Facebook, in my opinion. Facebook revenue and Facebook valuation are also big mountains for a competitor to surpass. Facebook pretty much has the dominant position in user base and mindshare.

From what i`ve read is true that Facebook is now getting more traffic than Google itself. However i could bet that Google is not concerned about this because only a very little portion of the people who uses facebook are looking to buy something. Facebook is getting too much traffic because of the "social" madness. People are looking to socialize with their friends and make new friends also and the number is rising daily.
However people who are looking to buy or found something with other words the must valuable traffic goes to Google directly.

At the onset of Google+ I think they're seriously trying to get back the traffic that Facebook now is having, whether they're going to be successful or not remains to be seen

Though it's obvious that can still win the race against Google, who knows with Google's new G+ it could be more accepted by Facebook users, too.

Facebook is still on top. I think people like facebook more then twitter because there is to much noise on twitter.

Google gets its ranking by providing good search results.
And Facebook get its ranking by providing good place for people to hang out socially.
With Google+, can Google grab all the social traffic from Facebook?

How come the G has a less pagerank than Facebook? I always wondered that. I guess they are now trying to gain ground by pushing Google+. Will they succeed? It will be an interesting journey.

With Facebook you now have a tool that can quickly and easily enable you to share information, ideas, and support with other local groups.

I am sure that Facebook has Google's total attention with the amount of traffic that Facebook is getting.
I guess that is probably the only reason for Google plus is for them to start competing directly with Facebook.
