On Tuesday the news of the launch of Google’s browser Chrome flooded the major news outlets, both online & off, adding a new competitor to the browser wars between Firefox & IE. In one day, Google Chrome reached the #12 ranking in our Computers & Internet – Software category out of 2,553 websites. The market share of visits to Google Chrome was higher than to Mozilla on Tuesday (ranked #19), but still fell behind the Microsoft Download Center. The average visit time for the day on Google Chrome was 2 minutes and 48 seconds.

The usual suspects referred the bulk of traffic to the Google Chrome download page, with 79% coming from Google.com. Out of the top 50 referring websites, 83% of traffic was from Google Properties, which includes other Google sites from different countries, News, Image Search, etc. Also, (somewhat amusingly amongst the others in the list), 50 Cent’s website This is 50 rounded out the top 10 sending traffic to Google Chrome on Tuesday, most likely from a link from reader comments (I could only find a post about the Google Phone on the website). Among the categories, Search Engines category were the main driver of traffic, followed by Software and News & Media

So this is the round-up of Day 1 for Google Chrome – we’ll keep updating as more stats become available, especially as more news and reviews are released about the new browser. I noticed that Google has added a link on the homepage which should be a major traffic driver. In Aug 2006, when Google replaced a link (a much smaller one along the top navigation) for Froogle with Google Video, we saw traffic jump up (read about the initial results here). Will we see the same results again?

UPDATE: Google Chrome reached the #4 rank in the Software Category on Wednesday, Sept 3, 2008. 82% of the traffic was referred from the Google homepage.

Awesome info - we noticed it was on Google home page and heard a ton of friends who are not in the industry found it through there.
