The Fan Fiction Phenom

This week's Science of Search column is up on TIME.com. Several months ago, when I stumbled upon FanFiction.net when looking at our Entertainment - Books and Writing category, I had never heard of Fan Fiction. That one fan fiction site alone, Fanfiction.net accounted for over 30% of visits to the entire category. I took a poll around the office... 10 of 10 respondents also had never heard of this category of consumer generated content. Here's the growth chart for Fanfiction.net:
