Google Universal Search - Video and Maps Benefit

June 07, 2007

Our column in TIME this week is about Google's dominance of the search market which, as of this week, measures at 64.8% of all U.S. Internet searches, more than double the nearest competitor Yahoo! Search. I've had many requests for an updated Google Properties chart posted here, but decided to do a pre/post analysis of the recent Google Universal Search initiative announced May 16, 2007.

Percentage U.S. Visits to Custom Category of Top Google Properties

It appears from this early analysis that the big winners for this new format are YouTube and Maps, while Image Search and News (which under the older format were occasionally featured top of page) are on the losing end.

Its pretty True that Percentage positive change shows fact that youtube and maps are apparently winners comparing to other contributors...

One more thing could be imphasized that Google video and Orkut shown Stability in their results too...While Google search Results did shown a small decrease of 0.32% Which could be considered as mere fluctuation as compared to its dominance in market.

I thing the Google Maps rise in traffic might be because the release of Street View which got huge buzz and blog coverage.

Did you factor Summer vacation into your "analysis"?

Worth pointing out, schools let out during this same period of time!

Users being out of school for the Summer and going on Summer vacation could account for both a decline Gmail as well as Google Book Search. At the same time, users mapping out their Summer vacation destinations could account for an increase in Google Maps.

Picking "winners" at this point, is a little premature.
