eBay's Experiment - An Update

Reuters is reporting this morning that eBay began running limited Sponsored Listings ads on Google ending their experiment to proceed sans-Google paid ads. The chart below shows the percentage of traffic that eBay receives from Google in the U.S. on a daily basis. The experiment began June 12th and continued for 10 days.

While the move clearly impacted eBay's upstream traffic from Google, eBay's traffic was minimally impacted as reflected in this chart.

I'll update these charts once we're past the weekend.

Hi
Looking at the incoming traffic it seems to hurt ebay, but with all of ebays regulars I don't think it did to much. I think ebay is hurting themselves and doesn't need google to do it for them. I had been an ebayer for years, almost from the start. Always following the rules and had almost 100 percent positive feedback. I had helped my sister get start back in '99 and she was a great ebayer, she had opened another username and forgot about it, it had a few charges on it. $22.00 I think, they shut down that account, her other account, which she was a powerseller with and my account because I let her start her account with my credit card. I can't get them to open my account back up and she can't get them to open her account. It's just so upsetting.

It's cool to know that the traffic wasn't impacted heavily. But then that raises a few questions. Why's eBay been spending so much.

Pondering this more, eBay must have a huge amount of regular traffic coming to it, people who know it already. So it would be interesting to see what percentage of new visitors Google sends. More important, it would be very interesting to see how well those people convert.
