Google Music?

May 22, 2006

A post by Barry Schwartz on Search Engine Watch caught my eye today. The post points to several Google moves that indicate that a Google Music offering may be the next vertical announcement. On Friday we released a breakdown of Google visits by property. One of the other statistics that we have access to is the downstream visits (or sites visits immediately after Google) from Google to other sites grouped by industry category. As we can see from the table below, visits to music sites downstream from Google amount to 2.89% of all downstream visits. (Computers & Internet at 20.6% contains email services, portal front pages and other search engines).

Of the 2.89% of visits downstream visiting music sites, the following table highlights the top 10 sites that are a part of that downstream percent.

As you can see the majority of traffic is going to music lyric sites versus music services. Look for tomorrow's post when I'll discuss some additional insight on Google's growth from pure search to portal player.

I frequently do lyrics or tablature searches on Google when I'm trying to learn a new song, and the ad-supported lyrics sites have some of the most invasive, pop-up & adware laden advertising that I've ever seen. If Google can find a way to improve the lyric/tablature SFO experience that'll be music to my ears!
