Walmart.com Surpasses Amazon in Marketshare of Visits

November 29, 2005

Yesterday we released another press release in the Hitwise Holiday Series. One of the data points we picked up on last week was that, for the first time since we began tracking sites in the U.S., Walmart.com surpassed Amazon.com in market share of visits. Its interesting to note that this milestone occurred on Thanksgiving, which according to our Retail Index of the top 100 online retailers, was the busiest day of the year in market share of visits.

I had a little time this morning to do a post mortem on Walmart's Thanksgiving Day success. Using Hitwise Clickstream Analysis, I discovered that Walmart.com received a significant spike in upstream visits from Yahoo! on Thanksgiving Day. From Yahoo's perspective, Walmart.com was the 7th downstream site for the same day (see chart below). This demonstrates both the power that Yahoo! has in driving traffic for its advertisers as well as how Walmart.com executed a successful Thanksgiving Day Internet marketing campaign.

I think Walmart.com traffic spike from Yahoo! was achieved because of the flash animation banner design when people hit it by mistake.
